![]() In the announcement, Bonforte says Smart Contacts understands the relationship between a user’s contacts, making adding people to a group faster. Yahoo Messenger also uses Xobni, a service that offered search- and people-based navigation on Microsoft Outlook, to power its Smart Contacts. Get instant access to a virtually unlimited and ever-growing library of GIFs pulled from the Tumblr community, where tomorrow’s most popular GIFs are born each day,” Jeff Bonforte, senior vice president of Product and Engineering for Communication Products, said in the blog post announcement. “Now you can search and find the perfect GIF in the new Yahoo Messenger app. GIFs are all the rage, so apps like Facebook Messenger have added the ability for users to search for GIFs, and Yahoo is following suit. Similarly to GroupMe, the app also lets users “like” other messages, and any group member can add other participants, change the name of the group, and change the group photo. “Unsend” lets users delete a message, photo, or GIF, making it disappear for everyone in the conversation. Working off the cloud, the app also lets users download the photo in full quality.Īnother highlight is its “unsend” feature, which acts more like “I never said this.” When you delete a message in most messaging apps, it goes away for you, but others who have received the message can still see it. Utilizing acquisitions like Flickr and Tumblr, Yahoo Messenger’s feature highlight is its ability to send “hundreds of photos” at a time that simultaneously appear for everyone in a group conversation. The new app integrates with Flickr, Tumblr, and Xobni platforms, allowing users to pull and share GIFs and images instantly. Yahoo pulled its messaging app in the spring, but the company just relaunched it with a focus on group messaging and sharing. Ken Wolter / ShutterstockIf you weren’t satisfied with the dozen or so messaging apps available, there’s an old contender returning from the dead - Yahoo Messenger. Opinions expressed in this article are those of the guest author and not necessarily Search Engine Land. And while I haven’t been through every corner of the app and site - I’m sure there are imperfections - the degree to which Yahoo has really gotten it right with the new Yahoo Mobile is impressive. It’s hard to exaggerate what an improvement Yahoo Mobile is over what previously existed. (There are also ads here already and Yahoo’s various targeting capabilities as well.) Yahoo Mobile is conceived of as a start page for the entire mobile internet and many people will undoubtedly come to use it that way. I especially like the look and feel of the Twitter integration. Yahoo Mobile is also highly customizable, allowing users to add feeds from any source. Voice-powered oneSearch is not yet a part of the new iPhone app I expect it will be at some point.Ī compelling feature of Yahoo Mobile beyond its elegant UI, is the fact that it provides access to third party sites and content including email and social networks (what Yahoo calls “social pulse” is intended to manage third party social networks in mobile). Feeds from MyYahoo can easily be added as well. Yahoo Mobile brings together Yahoo oneSearch with the full range of Yahoo properties, such as news, calendar, weather, movies, Flickr, sports, etc. ![]() While the iPhone version leverages location, the mobile website allows users to set a default location thus equally providing localized content and results where appropriate. The image above is of the iPhone app, but the mobile web version is very similar in terms of look and feel and will allow for a consistent experience across devices - on a global basis. ![]() There’s also an iPhone version of Yahoo Messenger available this evening. This evening the new mobile website and iPhone app formally launched and they represent a dramatic improvement over what came before. Mobile represents a more coherent integration of what what had been a fragmented collection of mobile properties: oneSearch, Go, oneConnect and onePlace. At the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona in February Yahoo announced “Yahoo Mobile,” a more integrated presentation of Yahoo’s mobile assets and a successor to the ineffectual Yahoo Go. ![]()
